Studio behind Conduit 2, Tournament of Legends trims payroll, projects in development continue as scheduled.

Conduit developer High Voltage Software is streamlining its operations, laying off dozens of employees a little less than a month after shipping its latest games, the Wii-exclusive fighter Tournament of Legends.
The layoffs were first reported by Joystiq, and confirmed for GameSpot by the studio’s vice president, Eric Nofsinger. Nofsinger put the number at 25 product development positions, and specified that “no other reductions are expected.”
While the Chicago-area developer has spent much of the last 17 years working on licensed projects, it might be best known among gamers for its recent Sega-published original intellectual properties on the Wii. In addition to Tournament of Legends, High Voltage developed the first-person shooter The Conduit, and is currently at work on the sequel. It is also working on The Grinder, a violent shooter originally intended to be a Wii exclusive, but later switched to a multiplatform game. Asked how the layoffs would impact those titles, Nofsinger said they “will not affect our projects.”

Electronic Arts packing in pared-down basketball game with copies of newly rebranded hardwood simulator for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3; arcade title won’t be sold separately on XBL and PSN.

After months of rumor and speculation, Electronic Arts today confirmed that NBA Jam will surface for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360…but with a hefty catch.
The publisher today sent word that copies of NBA Elite 11($59.99) will include a redeemable code to download a stripped-down version of NBA Jam. Included in the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions will be the Play Now, Classic Campaign, and Online modes. However, the Remix Tour, which serves as NBA Jam’s primary campaign mode, will remain exclusive to the Wii version.
According to an EA Sports representative speaking with ESPN, purchasing NBA Elite 11 be the only way to play NBA Jam on the Xbox 360 and PS3.
“We’re not selling ‘Jam’ on PSN or Xbox Live,” Jordan Edelstein, vice president of marketing for EA Sports, told ESPN. “If you still want the full product, the full experience is on the Wii, but if you pick up ‘Elite,’ you’re still getting a good taste of it, especially with the inclusion of online play.”
The complete version of NBA Jam–available only on the Wii–will include the Remix Tour. This mode includes boss battles against NBA legends, such as Magic Johnson, and comprises “about 20 hours of gameplay,” according to Edelstein.
NBA Jam will arrive for the Wii on October 5, the same day that NBA Elite 11 launches for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. For more on the Wii arcade basketball game, check out GameSpot’s most recent preview. And for a look at NBA Elite 11, check out the game’s player reactions video embedded below.

Light week at retail sees arrival of Microsoft’s slim-line $200 Arcade model, Monster Rancher DS, Disney’s Sing It: Family Hits.

The good news is that next week marks the arrival of EA Sports’ Madden NFL, better known as the traditional kick off for the holiday season and the influx of games that comes with it. The bad news is that the week before Madden’s arrival is pretty much as bare as a release schedule comes from the US gaming industry.
In fact, the biggest release of the week isn’t even software. Instead, Microsoft takes top billing with the launch of its latest hardware revision for the Xbox 360 Arcade unit. Available at the $199 price point, the system resembles the slim-line 250GB hard drive model, though with a black matte finish. However, instead of external memory, it includes 4GB of internal flash memory, as well as a wireless controller, built-in wireless connectivity, and five USB ports.
As for software, UFO Interactive will be releasing Tecmo Koei’s latest installment in the Monster Rancher series for the DS. The monster breeding and battling game features a number of classic critters from previous installments in the franchise, including Mocchi and Suezo.
Karaoke fans also have something to look forward to by way of Disney’s Sing It: Family Hits. Available for the PlayStation 3 and Wii, Family Hits offers classic Disney tunes from films such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Lion King, and Aladdin.
For further details on the week’s games, visit GameSpot’s New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later in the week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

Zipper Interactive confirms Move-compatible military shooter won’t see release until next year.

Next year could be a big one for PlayStation 3-exclusive shooters. Killzone 3 was already set for a February debut, rumors persist of a 2011 launch for the still-unconfirmed Resistance 3, and developer Zipper Interactive today confirmed the tactical shooter SOCOM 4 won’t be deploying until next year.
In a post on the game’s official blog, SOCOM community manager Jeremy Dunham posted a note confirming the release window. The reason given for the wait is that the team wants “to deliver the best and most immersive SOCOM game we possibly can and we’re going to use our extra time to do just that.”
SOCOM 4 will be set in Southeast Asia after a revolution endangers a vital shipping lane similar to the Strait of Malacca. Players assume the role of the commander of a five-man squad of NATO commandos dispatched to prevent international trade from being disrupted. Their mission will only last six days, a time limit that Sony says will add urgency into the campaign.
As is a staple for the series, SOCOM 4 will have an extensive multiplayer component, allowing for teams of players to shoot it out in 32-player matches. Terrain types will include a hostile jungle and half-ruined cities.
For more on SOCOM 4, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.
