Xbox 360 | Force Unleashed sells 7 million, Hoth DLC arrives

February 20th, 2010 No comments

LucasArts’ Secret Apprentice-led Star Wars action adventure hits new sales milestone; Infinities storyline concludes on PSN now, Xbox Live February 23 for $10.

LucasArts kicked off the Infinities storyline for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed in August 2009 with the release of Tatooine Mission Pack, a downloadable add-on that continued the storyline of Darth Vader’s Secret Apprentice. However, to conclude that storyline, players had to purchase Star Wars: The Force Unleashed – Ultimate Sith Edition, which included the accompanying Hoth Mission Pack, along with the original game and other DLC.

For those gamers who didn’t take the plunge to pick up the Ultimate Sith Edition, LucasArts is now offering the Hoth Mission Pack as a separate download through Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. The PS3 edition of the add-on is now available for $9.99, and the XBL version will follow on February 23 for MSP800.

[WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!]

The Infinities storyline begins after one of the numerous endings to the original, when the player kills Vader and becomes Emperor Palpatine’s assistant and a Sith Lord. The galactic dictator then dispatches players to Tatooine, where they try to track down and kill the Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The Hoth Mission pack continues this journey and sees the Secret Apprentice traveling to the titualar icy planet to do battle with Luke Skywalker and wipe the last traces of the Rebellion from the galaxy. Players will also find themselves visiting locations made famous in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back.

The original Star Wars: The Force Unleashed launched in September 2008 to lackluster reviews. However, the game’s critical reception did not impact its commercial success, and LucasArts said today that the game has now sold more than 7 million units worldwide. In December, the publisher announced The Force Unleashed II for release on unspecified platforms in 2010.

Uncharted 2 getting multiplayer trophies, more DLC Feb. 25

February 13th, 2010 No comments

We sure hope you’ve gone through the rigors of grabbing the Platinum trophy in Uncharted 2 already, because it’s about to get a tad harder to unlock. On February 25, a patch for the multiplayer component of the 2009 Game of the Year[TM] will be released, adding 12 new trophies and 12 in-game medals. You can find a list of both of these unlockables after the jump.

In addition, a batch of Uncharted 1-themed DLC will be simultaneously added to the PSN, giving players access to six character skins from the original title: Original Drake, Elena, Atoq Navarro, Eddie Raja, Gabriel Roman and Javier. There will be two new maps as well: The Flooded Ruins, which takes place in the customs house from the first game, and The Facility, which is based on Uncharted’s submarine dock area. The maps and skins will be bundled together for $5.99, or sold piecemeal for $3.99 and $2.99, respectively.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 to have day-one DLC

February 10th, 2010 No comments

In what’s becoming the rule rather than the exception for EA games, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will receive day one DLC. Speaking to Worthplaying, senior producer Patrick Bach said, “We have an in-game store where you get free content or you can buy new content to the game, so it’s a very integral part of the game that we will have a long post-launch campaign. I think people will be thrilled to see what’s in that already. On day one, you will get some really cool stuff.”

It’s still not clear if that “really cool” stuff will be free, for-pay or both — in the case of EA’s usual in-the-box DLC strategy, it would be free to new buyers and sold separately for used copies of the game. You’ll remember that during the release of the first Bad Company, EA was actually threatened with a boycott for its (soon abandoned) strategy that would have created an in-game gap between players that spent extra money and those who didn’t. Hopefully EA and DICE will be a bit smarter about things this time around.

What the headline said. Though I will add that Jim McMahon’s appearance in the Super Bowl Shuffle spoof ad for Boost Mobile got the first big laugh out of me for this year’s ad slate.

Back of FFXIII box for 360 mentions DLC

February 8th, 2010 No comments

It looks like that entire game’s worth of removed content might be making it into Final Fantasy XIII after all. GameStop has posted the box art for the Xbox 360 version of the game and, more importantly, it has also posted the art for the back of the box. As you can see above, the box mentions that Final Fantasy XIII will support downloadable content after all, though there is no mention of what the DLC actually is. It’s worth noting that the content could be something as simple as Avatar outfits or accessories, though it would certainly make sense for Square Enix to supply its most well-known franchise with post-launch DLC.

The news comes after producer Yoshinori Kitase was rumored to have stated that no DLC had been planned for the game, though he noted it was still “possible.” Final Fantasy Union, however, notes that Kitase apparently confirmed DLC during a recent interview with the Dutch Official Playstation Magazine. The box art certainly seems to confirm that, though we’ve reached out to Square for clarification. As of this writing, GameStop has yet to post the art for the back of the PS3 version, so it’s unclear if both platforms will support said content.

Borderlands DLC bundled in retail package

January 30th, 2010 No comments

We wouldn’t blame you if you’re hesitant to trust your cold, unfeeling game console with your credit card information — when that thing inevitably goes sentient, you just know its just going to go on an overpriced accessory-shopping spree. Fortunately, there’s other ways to obtain content on the Xbox Live Marketplace; for instance, a recently added GameStop listing has revealed that Borderlands‘ two DLC packs, The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned and Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot, will soon be bundled together in a retail package for the 360 and PC.

The bundle, which is set to drop February 23, will be priced at $19.99, which is how much the DLC would cost if purchased separately on the Marketplace. Only, now you’re also paying sales tax, meaning you’re buying an expansion pack and paying for a few pages of a public elementary school textbook. How nice of you!

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]
