We would like to own this clock which plays Pong, please

February 28th, 2010 No comments

We admit it — we’re suckers for a stylish timepiece. A surprising portion of our income goes towards purchasing new, fancy clocks, turning our living quarters into a slightly less melty version of Salvador Dali’s “The Persistence of Memory.” The latest object of our affection? Adafruit’s Pong-playing MONOCHRON clock, in which two AI opponents compete in pixelated table tennis, and the players’ scores denote the current time. Check out a video after the jump to see the chronometer in action.

Sure, it’s not the first Pong-clock we’ve ever laid eyes on, but with a slim $80 price tag, it is the first we’ve ever considered actually purchasing. Sadly, you have to assemble the clock yourself, a process which requires “some basic soldering & hand tools.” Curses! We knew our decision to take home economics instead of shop class would come back to bite us one day.

[Thanks, PT!]

Naughty Dog Helping Naughty Dogs [La]

February 18th, 2010 No comments

Reader Christopher was down at his local animal shelter in Long Beach, California recently when he noticed something a little odd.

The kennels there are mostly sponsored by companies to help keep things running, and most of those companies are pet-related. Dog food, cat grooming, that sort of thing.

Except this one, which is sponsored by video game developer Naughty Dog, the team responsible for the Uncharted and Jak & Daxter series.

Know what I like most about this? This is the first I’ve heard of it. There wasn’t a press release issued with pictures of it being built, or a Spike TV segment showing some guy dressed up as Nathan Drake cuddling lost dogs. It’s just…something that’s been done. Which is the way this kind of business should be done.

Red Dead New York City [Rockstar]

February 10th, 2010 No comments

So your game is suffering from some poor publicity? Why not have a building-sized version of Red Dead Redemtion’s hero John Marston blow all your troubles away.

Continuing a long tradition of plastering New York City streets with giant game posters, this Red Dead poster can be seen on the corner of Canal & Greene (which, being only a few blocks away from Rockstar’s offices, was also the location of giant Chinatown Wars and GTAIV advertisements).

Least it could be seen, if the city wasn’t buried under shitty weather today.

New Dragon Age in early 2011 on consoles, handhelds & PC

February 8th, 2010 No comments

If you’re pacing out your Dragon Age playing to ensure that you have a steady drip of elfin lovemaking and epic dragon fighting, here’s a bit of new info to consider in your tactical strategy: EA is planning to launch a new Dragon Age title in Q4 of its fiscal 2011, which, in real-world time, falls between January 1 and March 31, 2011.

Intriguingly, EA currently lists “Dragon Age Title TBA” (that’s what it’s called at the moment) for consoles, PC and handhelds — which could mean either handheld game devices, cell phones, or both. Whatever platforms it appears on, expect the game to be super hot. Assuming, of course, this is the real sequel to Dragon Age: Origins and not a spinoff.

You Can’t Play Dungeons & Dragons In Prison (Anymore) [D&d]

January 27th, 2010 No comments

Kevin T. Singer is currently serving a life sentence for murdering his sister’s boyfriend. He’s also challenging the prison’s rights to take away his Dungeons & Dragons.

Incarcerated at the Waupun Correctional Institution in Wisconsin in 2002, Singer had for two years been not only playing D&D with his cellmates, but had in his possession several books on the subject, and had even written his own 96-page scenario.

In 2004, however, the prison banned the game after an anonymous inmate complained that Singer and his friends were forming a “gang” around the game.

His game and reference materials were then confiscated by prison guards, on the grounds that they promoted “fantasy role playing, competitive hostility, violence, addictive escape behaviors, and possible gambling”.

Singer appealed the prison’s decision, but earlier this week 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected his pleas, on the grounds that “punishment is a fundamental aspect of imprisonment”.

Darkness, a man in a jacket, flashlights…yup, Alan Wake is back with some new screenshots, to get you excited for a game that still feels like it’s never going to actually come out.

Ulala and BD Joe get behind the wheel in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing

January 13th, 2010 No comments

It seems like the cast of Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing will never cease to expand. Not only has Sega tapped almost all of its memorable characters (including Shenmue’s Ryo), but its roster is also starting to encompass games outside of the Sega realm, including Banjo-Kazooie, Avatars and Miis. Today, the Sega blog reveals Space Channel 5’s Ulala and Crazy Taxi’s BD Joe. Check ‘em both out in the new trailer above.

Left 4 Dead 2’s Midnight Riders Wish You Warm Christmas Beatings [Clips]

December 25th, 2009 No comments

They may not be getting a starring role in Left 4 Dead 2 downloadable content as we’d hoped, but the self-proclaimed Greatest Southern Rock Supergroup of All Time is providing more musical back up than we were expecting.

The Midnight Riders—or their management, we presume, since the band has been missing in action since October—have released their holiday single “All I Want For Christmas (Is To Kick Your Ass)” online, giving Left 4 Dead 2/southern rock superfans a new Christmas anthem to break pool cues and beer bottles to.

The fiction, explaining how the Midnight Riders would even conceive of writing a Christmas tune, can be enjoyed at the band’s YouTube page.

While I prefer the feel of a new comic in my hands, it’s nice seeing reasonable prices on a digital shopfront for once.

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Christmas trailer is kinda creepy

December 23rd, 2009 No comments

To be fair, the above trailer isn’t terribly creepy in and of itself. It’s a fairly straightforward illustration of what gamers can expect from Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing. That is to say, it’s a kart racing game with a cast of colorful characters (and Ryo Hazuki, for some reason) and nifty power-ups. Frankly, we think most gamers can get behind the idea of transforming into Super Sonic in order to mow down the competition and win the race, so all of that is pretty acceptable.

The creepy part, you see, is the music behind the trailer. Specifically, it’s a parody of the classic holiday tune, “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” What’s so creepy about that, you ask? We’re not exactly sure. Maybe it’s just how earnestly it’s being sung. Watch for yourself and maybe you’ll see what we mean.
