DS | Square Enix Q2 sales rise to $382 million

August 6th, 2010 No comments

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2’s platinum debut helps lift publisher to 11 percent revenue growth, $21 million profit during April-June period.

The second quarter saw its share of fiscal headaches for many big-time publishers, with the likes of Capcom, Nintendo, and Activision all seeing revenues sink. However, a growing segment of publishers did make out well during the April-June period, including Electronic Arts, Microsoft, and, new to that list, Square Enix.

Reporting on its three-month earnings today, Square Enix said revenues for the period came in at ¥32.54 billion ($382 million), an 11 percent year-over-year rise. The publisher also reversed its ¥1.672 billion ($19.6 million) loss from last year to post a ¥1.812 billion ($21.3 million) profit during the period. Of those sales, Square Enix’s video game segment posted ¥16.63 billion ($195 million) in sales and an operating profit of ¥5.891 billion ($69.1 million).

In terms of new titles, Square Enix saw the biggest output from Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2, which the publisher released for the DS to Japanese audiences in April. Through the end of the June quarter, the handheld monster-battling title sold 1.25 million units. Square Enix said other top performers during the period included Final Fantasy XIII and Just Cause 2, though the publisher did not provide updated sales figures for either.

Square Enix’s arcade machine business also turned in a solid quarter. For the three months ended in June, Square Enix- and Taito-branded coin-ops brought in ¥10.98 billion ($129 million), with operating profit hitting ¥683 million ($8 million).

Looking ahead to its in-progress quarter, Square Enix has a crowded release slate. Later this month, the publisher will put out Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, both of which come from 2009 acquisition Eidos. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, Front Mission Evolved, and Final Fantasy XIV will follow in September.

PlayStation 3 | Activision Q2 sales slide to $967M, True Crime delayed

August 5th, 2010 No comments

Publisher reports 7% decline in April-June revenues as digital sales surpass retail; Hong Kong-set sequel bumped to 2011.

Activision Blizzard preempted its second-quarter earnings report with two notable achievements this week. First, the publisher said that Call of Duty franchise multiplayer map packs had now shifted more than 20 million units, and a day later announced that Blizzard Entertainment’s Starcraft II had sold 1.5 million units within 48 hours. However, the game company’s actual earnings report wasn’t uniformly positive, as the April-June period saw sinking revenues but growing profits.

For the three-month period, Activision Blizzard said total revenues came in at $967 million, down 7 percent from the $1.04 billion brought in a year before. Net income saw a significant bump during the period, however, rising to $219 million from $195 million during the year prior.

Activision Blizzard chief operating officer Thomas Tippl attributed the revenue shortfall to foreign exchange rates. He also said that Bizarre Creation’s Blur and Raven Software’s Singularity underperformed during the quarter. Of note, neither title cracked the NPD Group’s top 10 retail sales chart during their debut months of May and June, respectively.

Activision Blizzard said that earnings during the period were driven by the continued success of its stalwart Call of Duty and World of Warcraft franchises. Of the former, Activision Blizzard said Modern Warfare 2 was the No. 3 overall franchise in the US during the quarter, a ranking that rose to No. 1 in the first-person shooter space.

The publisher also used its second-quarter earnings report to reveal one change to its 2010 release schedule. Once slated for a fall 2010 release, United Front Games’ True Crime: Hong Kong is now expected to arrive in 2011. According to Activision Blizzard, the delay was necessary “in order to give the development team more time to deliver the high-quality entertainment experience they envision for the game.”

Despite the delay, Activision Blizzard maintained its outlook for its 2010 calendar year, thanks to an increase in expectations from the Call of Duty franchise during the fourth quarter. As such, the publisher still plans to pull in $4.2 billion during the year, with earnings per share expected to hit $0.49.

As part of a post-earnings conference call, Activision Blizzard CEO Robert Kotick also offered some deeper insight into the publisher’s earnings. “This is the first quarter that our sales from online channels outweighed our retail results,” Kotick said. The publisher also noted that digital online sales grew more than 20 percent year-over-year during the quarter.

During his portion of the conference call, Tippl confirmed that the Guitar Hero franchise has sold nearly 40 million units through the quarter. He also briefly touched upon the Infinity Ward situation, which saw a number of defections after studio heads Vince Zampella and Jason West were fired in March. According to Tippl, Activision has this year hired some 60 employees to work at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games, which is at work on an action adventure set in the Call of Duty franchise.

Activision confirms final Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions cover

July 15th, 2010 No comments

GameFly has proven that the speed of a game rental website exceeds the proportionate speed of a radioactive spider. The website posted the final box art for Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions well in advance of next week’s Shattered Dimensions Comic-Con panel, which is expected to provide the “official” reveal of the game’s fourth universe. Activision confirmed to Joystiq that the box art image is authentic.

There’s still plenty of info to reveal at that panel, however. The newly revealed, fourth version of Spider-Man (pictured on the far right) looks like he’s wearing the famous (infamous?) black “symbiote” costume, which raises questions about which “universe” it represents in the game. In the comics, the Secret Wars storyline that resulted in Spider-Man’s acquisition of this costume took place in the normal “Earth-616” Marvel Comics continuity, which is already one of the game’s revealed dimensions. (The other two are the Noir [Earth-7207] and Marvel 2099 [Earth-928] universes.) It’s possible that this probable symbiote costume is the version from the Ultimate universe, which would qualify as a separate universe and fulfill the game’s multidimensional gimmick.

Check out the full box art after the break, while we ponder the biggest question brought on by this reveal: When did we learn so much about Spider-Man comics?
